Hometown Glory
This project aims to explore the musical talents of the young generation, particularly those shaping their identities through a connection to home and their emotional experiences.
Marcus Cheung discovered a music talent at the London College of Communication at the University of the Arts London, a university renowned for nurturing future talent from diverse communities worldwide. In music, the project seeks to engage with individuals who are still developing their careers and have not yet entered the industry.
Tata Cheng, a 22-year-old Hong Kong native, currently resides in London and is pursuing a Sound Arts: Experimental Music degree at LCC. His interest in music began at a young age, and he enjoys reading, playing the guitar, and listening to folk, rock, and experimental music with a focus on improvisation and soundscape composition.
During our conversations, Cheng’s personality emerged as calm and composed. He sincerely appreciated nature and wildlife, often venturing to the countryside to conduct field recordings. Regarding music, he described it as a liberating experience, likening it to a “visual-centric world that transcends language.” Cheng emphasised that music is a place of imagination, allowing individuals to express their emotions freely. He highlighted the ability of music to foster a sense of belonging by enabling interactions with others without the need for language.
The final photographs illustrate the artist’s idea of home and how he connects the sound of music to his emotions, a feeling of belonging in nature, rock music, passion, and support from his partner.
